Assemblage, by Coil + Drift
Coil + Drift Temporary Showroom
2 Rivington Street, at Bowery Street, New York City
May 15 - 19, 10am - 7pm

NEW YORK - Coil + Drift is pleased to announce the opening of their temporary showroom during NYCxDesign and the launch of their latest collection, Assemblage.  The street-level showroom, open May 15 - 19, will feature the full Assemblage collection, which is composed entirely of lighting, as well as furniture pieces from Coil + Drift’s existing collection, many shown in new finishes. The space is located in Manhattan’s Bowery neighborhood at 2 Rivington Street and is inspired by the lighting shops that once lined the area’s streets.

After purchasing and renovating his first home last Spring, Coil + Drift designer John Sorensen-Jolink decided to create custom lighting for the home focusing on the specific needs of the space and its inhabitants.  The result was a series of lighting that felt especially personal to Sorensen-Jolink, so he decided expand the designs and Assemblage was born.  The collection includes the Yama table lamp, with a cylindrical tarnished-brass base and a shallow cone-shaped cloth shade.  Also included is Toam, a series of lights featuring a chrome and walnut wand-like stem with matte bulbs at the end; available as a sconce, pendant, and flush mount.  The Pierce light, available as a chandelier, sconce, and pendant, is comprised of sand-blasted glass orbs with brass stems pierced through them.

Based in New York City, Coil + Drift is the design studio of acclaimed modern dancer and self-taught designer John Sorensen-Jolink. The studio creates luxurious American-made lighting and furniture using brass, marble, resin, and wood, that is designed using the unique spacial awareness of a dancer and choreographer. The outcome is a collection that feels vividly three-dimensional, material forward, and rich with form and texture. Founded in 2014, Coil + Drift won the coveted ICFF Editors’ Award for Best New Designer in 2016.  They are on Sight Unseen’s 2018 American Design Hot List.

To mark the launch of Assemblage, Coil + Drift has collaborated with French brand 13 Bonaparte to create a limited-edition mirrored container to house their Bougie Parfumée.  The container is made of hand-cut pieces of one-way mirror and will be available for purchase as a set with the candle at 13 Bonaparte’s Manhattan store, conveniently located across the street from the Coil + Drift showroom at 1 Rivington Street.  Together, Coil + Drift and 13 Bonaparte will host a fête to celebrate the new collection and collaboration on May 14 (RSVP required).

Travelogue: Fundación de Artistas in Merida, Mexico

Occasionally when traveling you find a place so beautiful and inspiring, you just have to document it and show all the people you can.  This was the case for me when I happened upon Fundación de Artistas in Merida, Mexico during a recent trip to the Yucatan.  This non-profit foundation, opened in 2015 by the owners of Coqui Coqui, the famed local perfumer, is a center for the arts hosting exhibitions, performances, and residencies.  The foundation is housed in a stunning former colonial home in the center of Merida with large, spawling rooms used as gallery spaces all of which open up onto a beautiful central courtyard replete with a bubbling period fountain.

At the time we visited there was a perfectly-curated and inspiring exhibition of works by artist Ulrike Arnold and photographer Victor Van Keuren (above).

Instead of re-plastering and re-painting, the walls were all stripped and left bare, exposing extraordinary layers upon layers of brightly-colored paint, and creating a work of art all its own.  Local pianists often play for guests in the courtyard.

The foundation also offers fresh juices, a shop space (above) filled with beautiful work by local artists and designers, and a small library.

The perfect place to accidentally spend the entire afternoon, as I did.  Learn more about about Fundación de Artistas here.
